Russia and US attain humanitarian support deal that ‘will save countless lives’ in Syria


On Friday, the United Nations Safety Council prolonged a transnational support operation for Syrians from Turkey. US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield hailed the decision as a life saving motion.

She tweeted: “Today, millions of Syrians can breathe a small sigh of relief: vital humanitarian aid will continue to flow into Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for another year. This will save countless lives.”

In a separate tweet Ms Thomas-Greenfield pressured the significance of the deal within the historic context of a worldwide pandemic.

She added: “This is an important moment for the people of Syria, for the global pandemic response, and for the UN Security Council, which has shown we can come together to tackle complex challenges and deliver for people in need.

“A lot of work we need to do in the weeks and months to come.”

The choice was permitted in a unanimous vote by the 15-member Safety Council.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia stated the transfer confirmed each nations had been in a position to work collectively and aligned with the US President and his Russian counterpart’s earlier discussions.

He instructed reporters: “We hope that it might be a turning point that is indeed in line with what Putin and Biden discussed in Geneva.

“It demonstrates that we can cooperate when there is a need and when there is a will as well.”

It comes after Japan taunted its good relations with the US however issued a warning about Russia’s “exercising”.

Japanese defence minister Yasuhide Nakayama likened Russia’s latest exercise and the assault on Pearl Harbor.
